A standard CO alarm shows a green light and stays silent until levels reach around 50 PPM, sometimes for hours. Normal cooking won't set it off. It reads carbon monoxide and gas, not smoke or steam. Just keep it a metre or so from the hob. Very strong fumes like paint, solvents or cleaning sprays can affect the sensor, so keep it away from those too.
